The checklist includes items like water, non-perishable food, a battery radio, batteries, a first aid kit, and matches. With the 2026 hurricane season underway, the City of Tallahassee is encouraging residents to prepare for potential storms and take advantage of available resources aimed at improving safety and recovery.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30. City officials say personal preparedness plays a key role in protecting people, pets and property during severe weather events.

As part of its Plan for Readiness and Emergency Preparedness program, the city will host a free community workshop on Tuesday, June 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral. Doors will open at 5 p.m., giving attendees time to visit community partner tables and gather additional information.

The workshop will feature local experts who will provide guidance on emergency supplies, preparedness steps and available community resources. A youth component will also be offered, with age-appropriate activities and interactive lessons focused on disaster preparedness. Children will have a supervised space to participate while adults attend the main session.

City officials are also urging residents to ensure they can receive timely updates during emergencies. Utility customers are encouraged to review and update their contact information through the city’s system, which is used to send text and email alerts during disasters.

Residents can learn more about the PREP program and upcoming workshops by visiting the city’s website. Questions about the program can be directed to the city’s Neighborhood Affairs division at 850-891-8795 or by email at Neighborhoods@Talgov.com.
