As communities across the nation prepare to commemorate America’s 250th birthday, Leon County is inviting residents to take a closer look at the history that exists in their own backyard.

The Leon County Division of Tourism has launched “Beyond Your Block: America 250 Edition,” a five-week summer campaign designed to encourage residents and visitors to explore local landmarks, attractions and businesses while learning more about the area’s role in Florida and American history.

The initiative is tied to the statewide America250FL celebration, which marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Throughout Florida, communities are highlighting historic sites and stories that helped shape both the state and the nation.

In Leon County, that history can be found at six official America250FL Road Trip stops, locations recognized for their cultural, historical and educational significance.

Among those sites is Mission San Luis, where visitors can experience life in a 17th-century Spanish colonial settlement that once served as the western capital of Spanish Florida. Other stops include historic museums, landmarks and attractions that tell the story of the people, events and cultures that shaped the Tallahassee-Leon County area over centuries.

“Beyond Your Block” encourages participants to step outside their normal routines and explore destinations they may have never visited or have not seen in years. The campaign features local restaurants, breweries, shops, museums, parks and events across the community.

Participants can earn points by checking in at featured locations through the Visit Tallahassee mobile app. Visits to any of the six America250FL Road Trip sites earn 50 points, the highest point value available in the challenge.

The first 50 participants to earn 250 points will receive a limited-edition Tallahassee America 250 commemorative T-shirt.

Each location visited also counts as an entry into a grand prize drawing for a Tallahassee staycation package that includes a two-night hotel stay and tickets to local attractions.

Throughout the summer, the Leon County Division of Tourism will host special pop-up events at partner locations around the county. The events will feature giveaways and information designed to encourage participation and introduce residents to destinations throughout the community.

For residents of northeast Leon County and the Bradfordville area, the challenge offers an opportunity to venture beyond familiar neighborhoods and discover some of the historical, cultural and recreational attractions that have helped define the county for generations.

While America 250 commemorates a milestone in the nation’s history, local officials hope the campaign will also inspire residents to develop a deeper appreciation for the stories, landmarks and businesses that make Leon County unique.

Residents can participate by downloading the free Visit Tallahassee mobile app and selecting the “Challenges” tab.
