When most people think of Ocala, in Central Florida, horses naturally come to mind. After all, Marion County proudly claims the title “Horse Capital of the World,” with more than 1,000 horse farms in the region. But after spending several days exploring the area, I discovered that today’s Ocala offers far more than rolling pastures and championship thoroughbreds. It’s a destination where frequent local and regional equestrian competitions, along with world-class events, share the spotlight with glass-bottom boats, museums, outdoor adventure and a revitalized downtown.
No visit is complete without experiencing the World Equestrian Center. Opened in 2021, WEC, as it is commonly called, has quickly become a centerpiece of Ocala’s horse culture, hosting competitions throughout the year. Even if you’ve never saddled a horse, you’ll find yourself captivated by the manicured 2,000-acre campus. More than simply an equestrian venue, WEC has evolved into a luxury resort featuring elegant hotels, restaurants, shopping, spas and some of the country’s premier indoor and outdoor competition facilities.
The flagship Equestrian Hotel overlooks the Grand Arena, allowing guests to watch elite riders and horses compete from their guest room windows. Of course, viewing is also possible from restaurants and outdoor terraces. Across the property, the newer Riding Academy Hotel offers spacious accommodations ideal for families and groups. The recently opened Equestrian Manor expands the destination even further with rooftop dining, impressive ballrooms and conference facilities, with more upscale retail shops on the way.
Watching Olympic-caliber horses soar effortlessly over towering jumps is an unforgettable experience. During competition weeks, visitors can stroll through the barns, browse upscale boutiques, enjoy excellent dining and spend an afternoon immersed in a world many have never experienced.
Ocala’s equestrian heritage extends well beyond the jumping and dressage rings. At GoldMark Farm, visitors gain a behind-the-scenes look at one of Florida’s premier thoroughbred breeding operations. Touring the meticulously maintained farm and museum offers insight into the care, training and business of horse breeding.
For a complete change of pace, head to nearby Silver Springs State Park, one of Florida’s oldest tourist attractions. I know that personally because I first visited on a family vacation back in 1960. Long before Florida’s theme parks became household names, visitors marveled at the crystal-clear springs aboard the famous glass-bottom boats. They still glide over water so transparent that fish, turtles and underwater artifacts are visible below. Kayakers and hikers may even encounter rhesus macaques along the Silver River, descendants of monkeys introduced to the area in the 1930s.
Art lovers should not miss the Appleton Museum of Art, whose impressive collection ranges from European and contemporary works to Asian art and African artifacts. The museum provides a cultural stop that can easily fill several interesting hours.
Adventure seekers can literally soar through the landscape at The Canyons Zip Line & Adventure Park. Yes, in Ocala you can fly high above dramatic limestone canyons, sparkling lakes and towering cliffs. The terrain looks unlike anything visitors expect to find in Florida. Whether ziplining or horseback riding through the preserve, it’s another reminder that Ocala defies expectations.
Downtown Ocala deserves time as well. Around its historic square, you’ll find locally owned restaurants, wineries, boutiques, public art and inviting streets for leisurely exploration. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing or horse shows.
What surprised me most about Ocala was how much there is to experience beyond its celebrated horse country. The horses may attract you, but the springs, art, outdoor adventures and lively downtown give you plenty of reasons to stay and explore. For more information: OcalaMarion.com.
