Kate’s Tree, a historic live oak, is a symbol of strength and resilience for the island community, according to a recent release from the Amelia Tree Conservancy.

In the 1890s, Kate Bailey fought to save the tree from being cut down to make way for a new road, the conservancy said. Her efforts protected the tree, allowing it to stand for more than a century since.

After a large limb broke recently, the Amelia Tree Conservancy offered to cover the cost of a master arborist to oversee repairs to the tree, and the city accepted the offer, according to the organization. With the repair complete, the conservancy said the historic oak is expected to live another 100 years.

The Amelia Tree Conservancy credited its donors for making the repair possible.
