The Mandarin Community Club invites families to gather under the stars for the sixth annual Christmas tree lighting on Friday, Dec. 5, at the historic club grounds (12447 Mandarin Road). Gates open at 5 p.m., with the ceremonial lighting at 6:30 p.m. This free, family-friendly event — Jacksonville’s largest live-cut tree lighting — continues to grow in magic and meaning.
The tradition began in 2020 as a beacon of hope during the COVID-19 pandemic. With gatherings restricted and spirits low, club volunteers erected a towering Fraser fir to remind residents that Mandarin’s community pride could not be dimmed. What started as a modest display has blossomed into a beloved tradition, drawing hundreds of neighbors each year to marvel at the city’s grandest live-cut Christmas tree crowned with the signature Mandarin orange topper crafted by internationally recognized artist Brenda Mauney Councill, who has roots in Mandarin. In 2024, the city of Jacksonville Neighborhoods Department honored the event with a Neighborhood Champion Award, recognizing its role in fostering unity and holiday cheer.
This year’s ceremonial honors will go to First Coast News anchor Jeannie Blaylock, who will flip the towering tree’s switch at 6:30 p.m. Blaylock earned the honor after kicking off the club’s inaugural Florida Citrus Fundraiser with an on-air feature that spotlighted the state’s struggling citrus industry. Past dignitaries include Mayor Donna Deegan and Jacksonville Jaguars legend Tony Boselli.
The evening sparkles with live music from Smooth Vibes and Theatre Troupe 1776, complemented by visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus inside the clubhouse, and the festive touch of Florida snow flurrying through the air. Guests can enjoy offerings from food vendors, including Chick-fil-A Mandarin, Pour’d Perfections (hot cocoa and coffees), and Nothing Bundt Cakes, among others. Additionally, the event features children’s activities inside the historic clubhouse and club merchandise for sale, perfect for holiday gifts. The Mandarin Museum and Historical Society will open the 1911 Mandarin Store and Post Office for guided tours, offering a glimpse into the area’s rich past.
Beyond the entertainment, community giving remains central. Attendees are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items for the Mandarin Food Bank, as well as new, unwrapped toys for the Toys for Tots drive. The toy drive will be hosted by a Marine Corps representative inside the club, and toys may also be purchased on-site for donation. These efforts ensure the season’s joy reaches every corner of Mandarin. Both tables will be located inside the clubhouse.
In addition to the lighting celebration, Dec. 5 will also serve as the primary pickup night for the club’s Florida Citrus Fundraiser. For those unable to attend the lighting, a second pickup opportunity will be available at the club on Sunday, Dec. 7. Pickup times are as follows: Friday, Dec. 5, from 5 to 8 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to noon and 3 to 5 p.m. Please note that all fresh Florida citrus orders must be collected by Sunday, Dec. 7, or they will be donated to the Mandarin Food Bank.
Finally, recognizing that Mandarin is home to the largest population of Jewish residents in North Florida, the Mandarin Community Club will display a menorah throughout Hanukkah, adding another symbol of light to the season. Mark your calendars, bundle up, and bring the whole family. The sixth annual Mandarin Community Christmas Tree Lighting promises twinkling lights, warm hearts, and the official launch of the holiday season.
