<\/em>Heart of Jacksonville showcases African violets<\/b><\/p>\n

The Heart of Jacksonville African Violet Society is having its annual Show and Sale, April 1 from 12 p.m. \u2013 5 p.m. and April \u00a02 \u00a0from 10 a.m. \u2013 4 p.m. at the San Jose Church of Christ, 6233 San Jose Blvd. This judged show will feature many varieties of African violets and other gesneriads that are seldom seen by the public as well as two free seminars each day. <\/span><\/p>\n

A wide selection of African violets will be available for sale in addition to the club’s special soilless mix made especially for African violets. Parking and admission are free.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dogwood Circle members to learn about Green Roof Gardens and chickens<\/b><\/p>\n

The Dogwood Circle of the Mandarin Garden Club will host Genora Crane Orth, who will discuss Green Roof Garden and Raising Chickens at the program on March 15. The Orths are the winners of the 2014 RAP Outstanding River Friendly Yard award. They also were one of the 300 residents of Jacksonville that received a permit to house chickens, which requires a training course on raising chickens along with building their habitat. The program will be held at the Mandarin Garden Club, located at 2892 Loretto Road, and begin at 10 a.m. Call (904) 436-5234 for further information.<\/span><\/p>\n

Relay for Life of Mandarin to be held April 30<\/b><\/p>\n

The American Cancer Society will Paint the World Purple at the Relay for Life of Mandarin, to be held April 30 from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the stadium at Mandarin High School. Cancer survivors will be lead the opening lap and then be treated to a catered lunch. This year\u2019s local Relay for Life committee includes five cancer survivors. Eighteen teams and 81 participants have signed up so far and more are encouraged. Visit <\/span>http:\/\/relayforlife.org\/mandarinfl<\/span><\/a> for more information or to sign up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mandarin Toastmasters promotes communication skills<\/b><\/p>\n

Get ready to bloom this spring with the Mandarin Toastmasters Club. Does the idea of public speaking make you a \u201cshy violet?\u201d Join the Toastmasters to empower your communication and leadership skills in a supportive, positive learning environment \u2014 and have fun doing it. The Mandarin Toastmasters meet on March 5 and March 19 and the first and third Saturdays of each month from 10:15 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the \u00a0Mandarin South Library, located at 12125 San Jose Blvd. \u00a0For more information, visit our website, www.mandarintoastmasters.org. <\/span><\/p>\n

Film festival at Mandarin Senior Center <\/b><\/p>\n

The Mandarin Senior Center will host the International Lifetree Film Festival on Friday, March 4. Creative short films from around the globe will be showcased with the overarching theme of people who are \u201cdoing life\u201d or \u201cdoing good.\u201d Short films include \u201cGuang,\u201d \u201cSpaghetti for Two,\u201d \u201cMeet Joel\u2014My Last Days,\u201d \u201cDancing Outside the Box,\u201d \u201cUnburden\u201d and \u201cTitanic Love<\/span>.\u201d <\/span><\/i>The doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the films beginning at 7 p.m. Hors d\u2019oeuvres and beverages will be served at intermission and desserts and coffee will be served at the event social afterwards.<\/span><\/p>\n
