\u201cThe most important words we’ll ever utter are those words we say to ourselves, about ourselves, when we’re by ourselves.\u201d ~ Al Walker<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

What\u2019s the conversation sound like when you\u2019re playing or practicing \u201cyour\u201d golf? Recently we witnessed professional golfer Sergio Garcia\u2019s temper tantrum on TV during the last tournament, while hearing his Spanish slang spewing amidst the pommeling of the ground with his club. There was not a question what Sergio\u2019s self talk was all about.<\/span><\/p>\n

Club\/ball contact sounds can be a critical component in playing and practicing. Hearing a \u201cthud\u201d on the ground before the ball is hit from the mat is a sure sign of improper impact, as opposed to the sound of a soft \u201csmack\u201d of a pure shot. A \u201cwhiff\u201d sounds just like it sounds \u2014 no contact with the ball at all, and a high click represents hitting the ball thin, or in the belly of the ball, while a heavy \u201cthunk\u201d is a sign of hitting the ball fat, or scalping a dirt path before the ball.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to the golf ball sound feedback, typical self talk conversations I hear a student mutter often when I\u2019m giving golf lessons can be self-defeating: \u201cThat was terrible.\u201d \u201cOh No!\u201d \u201cWhat did I do wrong?\u201d \u201c&^%$#@!\u201d \u201cOh, you can do better than that!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sound familiar?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only what the sound of the contact of the ball tells us, the words we say out loud and to ourselves tell us a story as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOk, that was great direction, but could be better contact.\u201d \u201cOh yes, felt great but could be more on the target line.\u201d \u201cSounded like music to my ears, but balance was off at the finish.\u201d \u201cGreat direction; next time club up with the wind.\u201d This type of conversation not only minimizes the beating we give ourselves over miss hits, but educates us in the learning process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So the next time you are playing or practicing golf, instead of giving yourself a tongue-lashing, practice productive golf sweet talking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It won\u2019t be long before your golf shots are whistling to the \u201cSound of Music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Speak happy thoughts; hit happy shots!<\/span><\/p>\n
