{"id":4823,"date":"2018-10-26T14:51:26","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T18:51:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/floridanewsline.com\/Clone2\/?p=4823"},"modified":"2018-10-26T14:51:26","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T18:51:26","slug":"high-school-bands-enjoy-friendly-rivalry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/floridanewsline.com\/Clone2\/creekline-st-johns\/high-school-bands-enjoy-friendly-rivalry\/","title":{"rendered":"High school bands enjoy friendly rivalry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By Heidy Brosofsky-Weaver<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mail@floridanewsline.com<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each year, while the Bartram Trail High School Bears and Creekside Knights fight it out on the football field, the bands battle it out in the stands and during the halftime show, adding an air of excitement to the highly-anticipated game.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although the schools are long-standing football foes, the rivalry between the two superior-rated bands takes on a different tune.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have a friendly rivalry with Bartram. They inspire us to work harder,\u201d said Cecilia Fowler, a Creekside clarinetist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bartram trombone player Colin Jeffers agreed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere is a feeling of mutual respect and admiration that resonates throughout the marching bands,\u201d he said. \u201cWhatever you do, you are always applauded because they understand the hours of effort and sweat you put into it.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The friendship between the two directors, Jason Duckett from \u201cThe Spirit of Bartram\u201d and Rick Fowler from \u201cThe Power of Creekside,\u201d goes back more than 14 years. Before directing the inaugural band at Creekside, Fowler worked at Bartram with Duckett for four years, and the two still collaborate often.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cRick comes out routinely to help with jazz band, and I\u2019ll help with concert band,\u201d Duckett said. \u201cWe\u2019re on the phone a lot bouncing off ideas and giving feedback.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to supporting each other, both directors work closely with their feeder schools, building bands that are strong in talent from the bottom up. This includes hosting events such as jazz concerts and Eighth Grade Night at football games to generate excitement and create a sense of family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are blessed with solid feeder programs and are in an area where parent support is huge,\u201d said Duckett, whose eighth graders mainly come from Switzerland Point Middle and Liberty Pines Academy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe try to make a point of going to see our feeder programs a few times each year during the school day,\u201d said Fowler, who receives students primarily from Fruit Cove Middle and Patriot Oaks Academy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the most recent Eighth Grade Night at the Creekside vs. Bartram game, Fruit Cove\u2019s band director, Don Isabelle, watched with pride as more than 500 band members played the National Anthem while the color guard stood at attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA lot of these were my babies. It\u2019s great to be a part of this,\u201d said Isabelle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fowler agreed: \u201cPerforming the National Anthem is one of my favorite traditions. The importance of this event says something special about our programs.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Creekside senior Trey Rogers grew up in the band program and recalls his own Eighth Grade Night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt allows students to see what it\u2019s like going into the stands to play and move,\u201d Rogers said. \u201cIt gives them an idea if they want to commit to band or not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He mentored a fellow alto saxophone player, Kenny King from Fruit Cove, who wore a \u201cFuture Power of Creekside\u201d band shirt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI can\u2019t wait to play in the band next year,\u201d King said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of the middle schoolers described the event as \u201cfun\u201d and \u201cexciting.\u201d However, one student insisted it was \u201chot and sweaty.\u201d Upon hearing this, a uniform-clad percussionist laughed and said, \u201cYou\u2019re in a t-shirt. Try wearing four layers of clothes.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After the game, the Creekside band gathered for a meeting with Fowler and assistant director Jackson Gilchrist.
