St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar awarded Florida Representative Cyndi Stevenson (District 17) with the Florida\u00a0Sheriff\u2019s Association Legislative Champion Award\u00a0on Friday, June 10.\u00a0Stevenson has been a supporter of law enforcement and the sheriffs\u00a0of Florida.This year, she worked with the Florida\u00a0Sheriff\u2019s Association on HB 969, relating to orders of no\u00a0contact. That bill was a response to legislation that passed in 2015 (SB342) that made a\u00a0\u201cno contact\u201d order issued by a judge \u201cimmediately enforceable\u201d as opposed to taking\u00a0effect at a later time.<\/span><\/p>\n When SB 342 passed, it was thought that this change only applied in domestic\u00a0violence situations; however, it created a situation where an order of \u201cno contact\u201d\u00a0appeared to apply to every defendant in every case where there was a victim, arguably\u00a0even to a corporate \u201cvictim.\u201d<\/p>\n HB 969 fixed this inadvertent glitch by specifying that changes made in 2015 to\u00a0the definitions of a no contact order only exist if a no contact order is entered by a judge.\u00a0This will ensure protection for victims of domestic violence by making a no contact\u00a0order immediate, but still allow for flexibility for other crimes.<\/p>\n Photo courtesy St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office<\/em><\/p>\n Rep.
