Why is it important for homeowners to be aware of property fraud during National Homeownership Month?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>A. Homeownership is a major milestone, but it&#8217;s also an asset that can be targeted by criminals. Property fraud is when someone illegally records a fraudulent deed, mortgage, or lien, jeopardizing a homeowner&#8217;s financial security. Staying informed helps protect the property you\u2019ve worked so hard to own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. What are the risks if fraudulent property documents go undetected?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>A. If a fraudulent document is recorded against your property and it goes unnoticed, it could delay important financial transactions, or you could lose your home. The FBI lists property and mortgage fraud as the fastest-growing white-collar crime, making vigilance even more critical for today&#8217;s homeowners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. How has the St. Johns County Clerk\u2019s Office helped residents stay alert to property fraud threats?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>A. Since launching our free recording activity notification system in 2018, nearly 30,000 residents have enrolled, including 2,136 new participants since January 2025. With more than 100,000 housing units in our county, we remain committed to raising awareness and ensuring every resident knows about this valuable, no-cost resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. How does the Clerk\u2019s Office\u2019s free alert service compare to paid services?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A. While commercial services charge a monthly fee, our office provides a similar alert system completely free of charge. Though no alert can prevent fraud from occurring, our system gives homeowners an early warning so they can act quickly if suspicious activity appears. Signing up is simple at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stjohnsclerk.com\">www.stjohnsclerk.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Q. What is the best way for people to contact your office with questions?<\/strong><strong><br><\/strong>A.
